Sabatia Smallscale Farmers Association (Vihiga District).
SFA was launched in 2003 in order to fill in the gap left by the collapse of the Kenya Farmers Association and other cereal marketing cooperative societies. It has 68 groups with 1200 members and operates a bank account. It conducts group marketing for cereals and input distribution through the local community cereal bank and already maintains a library, office and market stall for marketing its products. Its members attend various agricultural training courses. The association has a group subscription of Sh 600 as well as benefits from the Vihiga Development Fund established by a consortium of NGOs and development organizations in Vihiga district. The group faces the following challenges: fertilizer input recommendations need to be reexamined and adjusted to according to the farmer conditions, farmers must better realize their farm potential with various technologies; members require improved access to maize processing tools to raise grain quality.
