The Kakamega Event: An Integrated Approach to Poverty Alleviation

 

This event was conducted on 24 November 2004 by Resource Projects Kenya and hosted at Bishop Nicolas Stam Pastoral Centre.  A range of presentations and exhibits were provided including value-added processing (18), integrated soil fertility management (15), traditional foods and plants (6), recycling and resource conservation (5), and information dissemination (3).  As at the Kisii and Kisumu events, there was great interest in the exhibit and presentation on striga, a parasitic weed that attacks maize and sorghum.  Participants also learned about herbal medicine, waste recycling and value-added processing, integrated smallholder resource management and the value of organic resources in food and income generation. The “Tissue Culture Bananas for Wealth Creation” exhibit by Habakkuk G. Khamala won the first prize, “Utilities of Agroforestry Trees for Livelihood Improvement” by Qureish Noordin, of World Agroforestry Centre, Maseno won the second prize and the third price went to Dick Morgan of Lunyerere Focal Area for his exhibit on “Integrated Production, Value Addition and Marketing of Farm Products”.
